1. Optimize space
The surface area of the warehouse contributes to increasing its running costs. Try to maximize efficiency so that smaller spaces can store more goods.
To do this, look first at the aisles and forklifts that run through them: divide up your warehouse stock into areas with the right size of access aisles for quick picking, eliminating unused space and making the whole process more functional.
Choose shelving that grows in height, increasing the available surface area while always paying the utmost attention to safety.
2. Protect goods
One factor that contributes to warehouse waste is the mismanagement of goods, which are accidentally damaged, lost or stolen.
Adequate packaging and well-defined storage procedures can minimize risks, as well as an automated control system that allows you to always know where the goods are located and where they have to be positioned.
3. Efficient use of electricity
Reducing energy waste can make a huge difference: make sure your warehouse is properly insulated and install an automated lighting system. These are investments that give results in the medium-long term, but whose economic (and environmental) benefits outweigh the initial cost.
Type of warehouse permitting, make the most of the sunlight by increasing the number of windows: in this way you will not only save electricity for lighting, but you will also reduce your winter heating costs thanks to the heat of the sun.
4. Make the most of automation
As we have already seen in this article, automation helps reduce overheads related to warehouse processes, improves space management and increases the safety of facilities and personnel employed, thereby increasing productivity.
Whether your warehouse is small or large, automation is an investment that always brings real savings.
5. Use equipment wisely
Whenever possible, optimize the efficiency of the equipment by using it simultaneously to perform two tasks.
Make sure you carry out the necessary maintenance on a regular basis, both to maintain the required safety standards and to avoid sudden breakdowns that result in wasted time and therefore wasted money.
Before buying a machine, think about how often it will be needed: if your answer is “rarely”, find alternative solutions to purchase, such as rental, so as to avoid unnecessary investment.
